Home Sweet Singapore

Updated: Jun 23, 2024

Modern, urban, and influential - Singapore is living a hundred years into the future! From posh and sustainable facades to top-notch restaurants, there is no shortage of things to do or see in this metropolitan "Little Red Dot" country. This post features a leisure touristic guide of top Singaporean sites that can be uncovered in a short few days, as well a personal trip into my mother's nostalgic past of living here during her school days.

Merlion Park, Singapore.

BEFORE YOU GO:

1. GRAB. Make sure to download the Grab app! It's the Uber of Southeast Asia and is a commuting necessity.

2. Don't forget your camera!

Explore Jewel Changi Airport

The Rain Vortex, Jewel Changi Airport, Singapore.

Satisfy your Singapore Insta-feed upon arrival at Changi Airport or simply visit and explore Jewel Changi, a nature-themed retail and entertainment complex surrounded by passenger terminals as well as baggage storage! The insta-worthy centrepiece, the Rain Vortex, is the world's tallest indoor waterfall, encompassed by a unique terraced forest.

Wander Through the Gardens By The Bay

Gardens By the Bay is an iconic Singaporean landmark entailing an impressive high-tech architectural masterpiece displaying astonishing plant and flower arrangements. There are 13 gardens, some of which require purchased tickets including the Cloud Forest, Flower Dome, and the OCBC Skyway.

The Cloud Forest

The Cloud Forest was one of my most favourite attractions to visit in Singapore, appealing greatly to the curious and adventurous! The site comprises a unique and immersive walk-through experience featuring some of the world's most exotic plant species in a large atmosphere-controlled greenhouse. We also had the opportunity to catch Avatar: The Experience during our visit.

Marina Bay Sands

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

Marina Bay Sands is unmissable - a massive ship stranded on top of three buildings! Although a hotel, the site also entails restaurants, shops, bars, cafes, theatres, casinos, museums, and most importantly, a SkyPark with unparalleled views of the futuristic city and the world's highest rooftop infinity pool! [If you've been following my travels on Insta, you know I'm keen on infinity pool dips!]

Meet the Local Legend at Merlion Park

Meet the globally-recognized icon at Merlion Park, located at One Fullerton. Travellers acquainted with Singapore will most probably already know the local legend of the Merlion, a part-lion part-fish creature depicting Singapore's origin as a fishing village and the city's original name, Singapura, meaning lion city in Sanskrit.

Merlion Park, a waterfront lined with hotels, restaurants, and cafes, is beautiful to visit during the afternoon-evening to capture a glimpse of the transition of day to night as the Merlion vomits towards Marina Bay Sands (meaning 'in abundance').

Visit Arab Street & the Sultan's Mosque

Take a stroll through Arab Street located in the historic district of Kampong Gelam, and catch a glimpse of the striking architecture of the Sultan's Mosque, a focal point for Singapore's Muslim community.

Orchard Road - a Shopping Paradise

Orchard Road - contrary to sad affairs as according to 1983 Leo Sayer - is a riveting retail heart with countless upscale boutiques and distinctive stores alongside luxury hotels! The boulevard's combination of baroque houses lined with casual bars, pubs, and eateries will also leave you with more energy than I had anticipated.

Clarke Quay

Clarke Quay, Singapore.

Situated next to the Singapore River, colourful Clarke Quay is packed with cozy riverside restaurants, cafes, and bars. A cute place to fill your stomach and people-watch!

Revisiting the Past - ISS International School

Hidden in the hills, we made a quick but nostalgic visit to my mother's school from when she resided alone in Singapore during her teen years. Stories of her youthful past sprung to life while walking in the physical sites of her school days. Singapore became beyond special after seeing my mother's love for this island and its ties to her youth and education.

Other things to do in Singapore:

1. Hike at the Fort Canning Park

Located near Clarke Quay, Fort Canning Park is an iconic landmark that has witnessed some of Singapore's most historic milestones from serving 14th Century Kings to housing the Headquarters of the British Army Barracks.

2. Peranakan Houses

Stroll past the colourful rows of heritage Peranakan shophouses and admire the unique pre-war architecture of this charming Singapore corner.

3. Raffles Hotel

Visit the most famous establishment, Raffles Hotel, epitomizing Singapore's colonial past.
